Respecting the King

It was disrespectful of journalists to jump of the bandwagon as quickly as they did following the death of the King of Pop.

Just hours after it was announced that he had died there were news reporters diving into controversial areas of his private life. With billions of Michael Jackson fans around the world grieving, this was highly inappropriate in my view. I do believe in the essence of objective reporting, but sometimes I feel reporters hide behind this to stir controversy.

What do you think? Should the press have backed off for at least a few days whilst billions were mourning?

  1. I do think it is a matter of respect and a mark of journalist responsibility to be conscious about covering news like this. Thus, my personal opinion is that media is satisfying the demand and we should start from ourselves and our own respect to famous people's personal lives.
Let's face it: such news generate enormous traffic for online sources, sell millions of newspapers and increase TV news ratings. And this is because many people like to dig into details of celebrities' tragedies and compete in making most true-like assumptions about their reasons and motives. Web is still flooded with links and posts on this topic and media is just following this interest.

  2. Absolutely! Who are we to impose upon a grieving family? Speaking from experience, when a family member dies all you want is to mourn the loss of your loved one in peace. It must be terrible having cameras flashed in your face everywhere you go! We should show MJ's family respect and allow them their privacy. I can't begin to imagine what Michael's family are going through right now, what a shock for them all. RIP MJ, hope you have found your Neverland with the big guy upstairs!
